The GeoproHYDRA™ comes in 2 different variants. The PRO version where the entire tool rotates or the "S"-Type, a much shorter tool, where only the nose rotates. All GeoproHYDRA™ systems are hydraulically actuated and require circulation to activate. Rotational speeds are in normally in excess of 1000 RPMs in all versions while the MPT (multi-purpose tools), which are much smaller diameter tools, i.e. ≤ 3½ inch (88.9 mm), where rotational speeds are in excess of 5000 RPMs.
First generation systems are high speed systems, come standard with 6 blades and an aluminium nose and very limited torque. Pressure drop across the system is low with no significant back pressure making the GeoproHYDRA™ the ideal tool for running delicate completions strings through unconsolidated formations where reaming may be required. The low torque output implies the first generation system is only suitable for operations requiring less torque, where momentum is sufficient to get the string to depth.
The GEN2 system significantly extends the torque output by up to 8 times, raising the torque output by the GeoproHYDRA™ to the lower thresholds of the MRS™. This improvement has enabled more cutting structure to be included on the GeoproHYDRA™ with a redesigned nose profile and a reamer housing blade profile that improves flow by area by over 40%.
